Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan kicks off the second semester of schoolyear 2022-23 with the schola brevis in the first week starting January 16, 2023. The schola brevis, Latin for short class, is a Jesuit tradition of holding classes briefly. In a memo on January 16, 2023, Dr Juliet Q Dalagan, Vice President for Higher Education, said that this period “allows students to rekindle with the Xavier Ateneo identity, history, traditions, and practices of excellence.”
For this semester, classes will meet onsite for the first two sessions during the schola brevis period. The hybrid mode of learning is still implemented; however, the number of required face to face classes has been increased from five in the first semester to 10 in the second excluding the four onsite major exams making the total number of F2F sessions a minimum of 14. This policy covers all GEC subjects which were conducted fully online last semester. Dr Dalagan further explains the hybrid set up especially on the role of Elearn in conducting classes. “One of the silver linings of doing full online classes for two years is our Elearn courseware. We will still use them as our platform for asynchronous works to supplement teaching and learning. I hope you are excited to start the semester knowing that you will be more physically present here on campus.”
Xavier University President Fr Mars P Tan, SJ greets the Xavier community with this message, “We thank the Lord for a successful first semester, congratulate ourselves, and make a resolve to do even better, in the spirit of Magis, in the second semester.”
Dr Dalagan also welcomes all students saying, “To all our higher education students, I warmly welcome you to another semester of school year 22-23! In the first semester, we started with hybrid learning after two years of full online teaching and learning. It is with great excitement that I want to share with you that we are really slowly transitioning to full onsite/F2F classes. We already increased the required number of F2F classes from 5 in the first semester and now 10 in the 2nd semester. We want you to have an enhanced learning experience through in-person collaborations and interactions. We will journey with you for you to be able to achieve your learning outcomes. Take advantage of this opportunity to experience excellence here at Xavier Ateneo!”
